US Special Operations Command relies on a small fleet of highly advanced special operations craft to quietly and safely guide special operators to targets.

SOCOM has several different craft designed for different challenges and situations, one of which, the Combatant Craft Assault, is one of the US Army's most used special operations craft.

The Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crew (SWCC), commanding the special command groups of the Naval Special Warfare Command, is one of the smallest special operations teams in the U.S. military.

Depending on the operating environment, SWCCs can offer four small craft options: Combatant Craft Assault (CCA), Combatant Craft Medium (CCM), Combatant Craft Heavy (CCH), and Special Operations Craft-Riverine (SOC-R).

The first three are designed for ocean and coastal operations. Special Operations Craft-Riverine is designed for operations in and around rivers.

Contrary to common misconception, special boat teams do much more than ferry SEALs. SWCC operators specialize in direct action operations at sea, infiltration and infiltration of special intelligence and other special operations units.

The capabilities of the SWCC and the sensitive maritime and riverine environment surrounding nearby adversaries such as China and Russia mean that special boat teams will play a significant role in a conflict involving one of these countries.

Combatant Craft Assault is designed for medium-range special operations and can be used to attach and remove maritime interdiction, coastal patrol and other special operations units.

The vessel is designed to complement smaller special operations such as the larger and less agile Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat and Combatant Craft Medium.

The CCA entered service in 2015 and replaced the Mark V Special Operations Craft. Special boat groups can send up to 30 CCAs. But the production line is still active and several boats have already been replaced or upgraded.

The 41-foot CCA has two powerful diesel engines and can reach speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, although the exact figure is classified as the CCA range, but specifications for similar vessels manufactured by the same company suggest special vessels. the distance is about 400 miles.

CCA is made from a composite material that resists rust and makes it lightweight yet durable. It's open to the elements, with only a windshield around the crew compartment. In addition to the four SWCC operators normally employed on the boat, it can accommodate eight special operators.

Combatant Craft Assault can pack a huge arsenal. It is tentatively armed with an M2HB .50 caliber machine gun, an M240 7.62 mm machine gun, an M134 minigun, and a Mark 19 40 mm mortar.

The special operations boat can now also carry small drones and may even be equipped with guided missiles in the future. SOCOM is testing several precision-guided munitions, such as the SPIKE NLOS anti-tank missile used by AH-64 Apache helicopters.

"The CCA is a convenient vessel that we use for a variety of missions. We can identify and intercept a target that we know is coming from a particular waterway, but we can also move through other SOF [special operations forces] elements. The bad guys are our they knew we were there," a former SWCC operator told Insider.

The CCA is also ideal for visit, boarding, search and capture operations where Marines, Green Berets, Marine Raiders, or Recon Marines board a suspect or enemy vessel.

Reflecting flexibility and versatility, CCA can be deployed anywhere in the world from land, a larger ship, or even from the air. The boat is airworthy and can be dropped from C-17 and MC-130 transport aircraft.

The standard procedure for such a drop involves the aircraft lowering the CCA with multiple static line parachutes that open automatically when the person or object exits the aircraft. SWCC users then jump onto the back of the boat and swim once safely in the water.

SOCOM is also looking to improve CCA sensors by adding Combatant Craft Forward Looking Infrared (CCFLIR), a multi-sensor electro-optical system that can identify, locate and track other ships and objects in the maritime environment. CCFLIR is already in use on Combatant Craft Medium and Combatant Craft Heavy.

"These boats can go very fast," said a former SWCC operator, who requested anonymity because he is still working with the fleet. "As a result, the forces we have to endure when using them are very strong. These 'g-forces' are a version of what pilots experience in flight."

"Our bodies get heavy and a lot of guys have back and neck surgery. People are also doing research on brain damage from all the impact," added the former cameraman. "It's something that comes to mind more when people talk about the [SWCC] community and their great boats."

US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) United States Marine Inc. awarded the company a $108 million contract for the construction of new battleship attack boats.

According to the Pentagon announcement, work on the contract is expected to be completed in April 2025. The contract notice did not specify the number of boats to be built.

Combat attack submarines are fast ships manned by special boat teams. The CCA's primary role is medium-range maritime interdiction operations in medium- and high-risk environments. It can also engage and withdraw special operations forces and conduct coastal patrol operations. CCA can be airborne in C-17 aircraft.

"This is great news for the talented craftsmen at USMI," said U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) of the agreement.

SEALs use specialized equipment operated by Special Warfare Operators to approach shores and augment and retrieve teams of Special Warfare Operators. These ships are fast, quiet, capable of operating in shallow water, and are armed with machine guns for use when their ships are blown away.
