Compact Beretta Pistols - A few months ago I decided to pick up something different from what I'm currently shooting. I snagged a Beretta APX Compact at my local gun shop. When I first picked it up and put the gun in my hand, I immediately noticed how aggressive the grip control was on the gun, which is not a bad thing for me. I think it's a good signature alternative and with three adjustable backstraps, the gun is able to fit many different hand types. The grip is right between a Glock 19 and a Glock 26. The APX Compact is just big enough to fit all my fingers in the grip, which is a plus for control. The compact version holds 13 rounds in the flush magazine and is quite a compact gun.

The APX is quite thick in width for what it is, but it helps with loading and manipulating a slide. My APX has a strong trigger with a defined thread that felt pretty nice for a stock factory trigger. Couldn't find a model with night sights in stock so bought the basic three dot setup which does the job just fine. Battle style sights are easy to assemble and are great for quick transitions.

One thing that really surprised me was the mag release pressure. The magazine flies out of the gun when you hit the release. I've been surprised more than once by how well the pistol's magazine capacity shoots, but it's useful when you get used to it. The overall ergonomics of the gun felt great and reminded me of the full size APX. In the hand, the gun felt solid and the grip made the gun feel anchored in your hand.

Range Report: Beretta Storm Subcompact 9mm

Disassembling the APX is fairly simple and breaks down like most polymer pistols with a disassembly handle. I cleaned the gun before hitting the range but didn't throw a ton of lube on the slide because I wanted to see how it would perform. I spent about a dry hour shooting the trigger and getting used to the gun after cleaning it, I was happy with how predictable the trigger pull was after some practice.

As for weapon lights, the APX Compact has a Picatinny rail for accessories, but it's a small space that doesn't have enough room to mount a Surefire X300 Ultra or Streamlight HL. There is plenty of room for a small laser or Inforce APLc, though, so head over there. The square trigger guard reminds me of the trigger guard from the M9A2 for some reason, but it doesn't affect shooting or handling. I've shot before when it was cold too, and the trigger guard was big enough to shoot with gloves. Wearing gloves can sometimes be a challenge when shooting in the colder months, but the APX Compact was a lot of fun to shoot with gloves on.

When it comes to shooting the APX Compact, the gun is very controllable and quite comfortable for the size of the gun. It has a very smooth recoil which makes it an easy gun to pick up and shoot. This controllability is likely due to its larger size than a gun of similar capacity but a smaller case. The SIG Sauer P365, for example, has a straight and fast retail that can seem off if you shoot higher pressure self-defense rounds. The P365 may be a little tight with some shooters, but it's much smaller. The APX is a bigger gun. But it is much softer to shoot when it comes to recoil.

On my first range trip, I put about 1,800-1,850 rounds through the compact APX and overall I thought it was a pretty nice gun to shoot. I didn't have an amazing reaction where I love the gun. It was a really enjoyable experience and because it shoots smoothly, I found myself enjoying the gun at the end of the day. The aggressive factory drilling on the front didn't kill my hand but it held the gun exactly where I wanted it and I liked how the overall grip performed while shooting.

Review: Beretta 92 Compact Pistol

I plan to shoot the gun more and update you on my thoughts in a few months. So far, enjoying the APX Compact and I think it fits a unique role in the market between the Glock 19 and the Glock 26. I would put it in the same category as the VP9SK or P30SK from H&K where they are compact but not micro pistols . I am pleased with how positive the grip is and how it almost feels like an extension of the full size APX. I plan to continue my testing of the APX Compact and report how it performed. I am an avid shooter and love to educate whether it is in my job or the shooting community. I'm an average joe who really likes talking to other people about guns and other passions. Bertha has been making firearms for around 500 years, with a founding date of 1526. They remained at the top of the pile in quality and respectability.

The gun - in military parlance the M9 - has proven to be reliable, accurate and easy to use well.

Beretta Model 92fs

Studies indicate that there are fewer accidental discharges with the Beretta 92 than almost any other service pistol.

While the actual safety is between the ears, a combination of a positive manual safety, a double-action first-shot trigger, a loaded chamber indicator, and a positive firing pin block are good features.

The Beretta also appears to be among the least likely of any 9mm pistol to jam or misfire.

The Beretta is not a small gun, but it is light enough and has a good magazine of ammo.

When it comes to self defense, serious handgunners try to maintain the power, accuracy and reliability of the service pistol, while using a shorter and lighter version.

The Beretta 92 Compact is not seen that often, but it is a nice handling pistol with excellent performance.

The polished pistol is delivered in a hard plastic case with cleaning rod, pistol lock and spare magazine, and the pistol is finished in a durable blue finish with flawless workmanship.

The gun is useful as produced. The author added a set of captures of the Wilson battle. The fit and feel is excellent.

The gun is a double first shot type. The initial shot is made by long pressing the trigger, which also activates and drops the hammer.

The slide retracts and drives the hammer for subsequent single-action shots. The double-action trigger is tight, but smooth at about 15 pounds.

The sights are designed for rapid acquisition at combat ranges and accurate fire out to at least 50 yards.

The Beretta uses the oscillating wedge lock created from the Mauser C96 pistol. The open slide is a unique trademark of Beretta.

When we tested this Italian-made pistol, the fit, finish and smoothness of the action seemed above average, but that's not the only telltale sign of superior manufacturing.

The barrel crown was well made with a true 45 degree cut in the crown. This is a step that most manufacturers skip.

The barrel is cut close to the Beretta Centurion style slide, which makes for an attractive look and a slightly shorter gun.

The grip angle geometry results in an S curve that seems to give a better purchase than the full size service pistol grip.

Of all the Beretta pistols that have crossed my path, from the Beretta 1934 to the latest Inox, this particular pistol is the most impressive and worth its price.

Every once in a while, an exceptional shooter will perform beyond expectations with the Beretta, others just don't get it.

Once the double trigger is pulled, the gun fires and the slide activates the hammer for single-action fire.

The safety is positive, like any Beretta de Cocker/safety combination. It is a personal choice if you want to carry the gun in a safe case.

An important advantage of the safety is that if someone manages to gain control of your gun, they may not understand how the safety works and may not be able to quickly manipulate the safety.

For this reason, I have known peace officers to grind the red dot that indicates the safety is off from their weapons.

In order to master the handling of a firearm, it is important to follow the basics, especially safety, and take things at an even and smooth pace.
