The Heckler & Koch VP9 (known as the SFP9 in Europe and Canada) is a polymer frame semi-automatic striker-fired action pistol. The name VP in the name refers to Volkspistole, which means "People's Pole".

The 9 stands for 9mm caliber designation. The VP9 is the third assault pistol produced by HK. A variant of the VP9, the VP40, chambered in .40 S&W, the VP40 is known as the SFP40 in Europe and Canada.

According to the manufacturer Heckler & Koch (HK), the pistol was in development for more than four years before it was released in June 2014.
It was originally designed at the request of the Bavarian State Police to replace the HK P7. Since HK has a long history of shooting pin-fired pistols, they decided to update their lineup with a newly designed system, giving the pistols a single-stage trigger-like feel and break.
The pistol's original designation was the "P30X" because it was essentially a striker-fired action derivative of the Heckler & Koch P30.
The VP9 is a percussion action pistol with Picatinny rail, ambidextrous controls, a polygon hammer barrel, and interchangeable straps and side straps that allow the pistol grip to be customized to any shooter's hand, featuring 27 Grip configuration options. More than four years in development, it was Heckler & Koch's first striker-fired action pistol since the P7 pistol line in the 1980s. The pistols were produced at the Heckler & Koch factory in Oberndorf in southwestern Germany.

Most striker-fired pistols have a pre-stroke pull that adds weight when the shooter presses back. The VP9 trigger has a slight, light pull-up with a solid single-action breakout followed by a short positive return. Average pull trigger stock weight is 5.2 pounds
(23N). The VP9 trigger has a consistent pre-travel pull followed by a positive setting and a clean break. Removal does not involve releasing the pin by pressing the trigger.
Both the VP9 and VP40 feature Heckler & Koch's ergonomic pistol grip design, including three interchangeable straps and six side panels, allowing the pistol to fit any hand size.
Finger grooves molded into the front of the pistol grip also instinctively position the shooter's hand for the best shot.

Although influenced by other HK models, the VP9 has some innovations of its own. The controls are fully ambidextrous. With fixed slide releases on both sides of the frame, the magazine release can be easily activated by left or right shooters.
A new feature is HK's Pat loading support. They are simple components that fit on either side of the back of the slide to provide a better grip for tilting the slide backwards. Loading supports rapid reloading and makes the VP9 easier for shooters with weaker hands. The VP pistol uses the same steel magazine as the Heckler & Koch P30 in 15 and 10 round capacity configurations.
The VP9 has an extended full-size picatinny MIL-STD-1913 rail molded into its polymer frame for mounting lights and accessories. The rail has been tested and certified to handle heavier mounting accessories due to the added rigidity of its full size. This rigidity gives VP9 superior functionality compared to some polymer competitors whose frames flex in use and are unable to hold the weight in some light medium to large installations.
In the United States, the VP9 is available at retailers in a standard package (includes standard three-point sight and two magazines) or "LE" (Law forcemt) package (includes factory equipped tritium night vision and three magazines) Purchase The night vision goggles are Meprolight Tru-Dots.

In late 2018, HK launched the VP9 B (B stands for "button") with a push-button magazine release in response to US market preferences. In January 2020, HK updated the VP9 design, adding a sliding cutout to mount the pistol's red dot optic, a new magazine with an increased 17-round capacity instead of a 15-round magazine, and a black heel blade. sight, which replaces the previous three-point configuration, is the new standard feature on the pistol.

Due to its trigger feature, Heckler & Koch marketed the SFP9 SF variant as a special forces pistol rather than a police pistol. The SFP9 SF has a trigger travel of approximately 6 mm (0.2 in), a relatively short trigger return of 3 mm (0.1 in), and a trigger pull of approximately 23 N (5.2 lbf).
The German Police Technical Specification (TR) (Technische Richtlinie Pistol im Kaliber 9mm x 19, revised January 2008) requires a first-shot trigger pull of ≥30 N (6.7 lb) for German Police Duty Pistol Certification.

The SFP9 TR has a trigger travel of approximately 11 mm (0.4 in), a trigger return of 5 mm (0.2 in), and a trigger pull of approximately 30–35 N (6.7–7.9 lbf) to accommodate German legislation for police pistols. .
The optical variant is equipped with a 140mm (5.5") barrel with a matching trigger of 19 N (4.3 lbf) and exclusive magazine in this variant with a 20-round magazine.
As of 2019, the manufacturer offers a "rail conversion kit" that converts a VP9 or VP9 B into a long rail model,

(July 2019) After more than four years in development, the VP9 is Heckler & Koch's newest pistol and the first striker-fired HK since the introduction of the popular P7 series of pistols in the 1980s.

The experience of HK engineers with the recent P30 pistol directly influenced the design of the VP9, but the VP9 broke new ground by integrating a unique striker firing system with HK's improved "pull light" trigger. The end result is a trigger quality unmatched in any production striker fired pistol.
HK pioneered the first striker-fired action pistols, producing the VP70 and P7 series, designs that influenced many of HK's competitor models. But most assault pistol designs do not feature a quality trigger. The VP9 trigger outperforms the competition. It has a short, light take up and a short solid-action break followed by a short positive return.
The VP9 trigger has consistent pull before travel and positive/fragile walls. Typically, pin-fired guns have a pre-stroke pull that adds weight as you move through the trigger neck. With the VP9, your pre-stroke pull is less noticeable until the trigger hits the engagement point of the fire control element before the trigger breaks.
The VP9 features HK's ergonomic pistol grip design that includes three interchangeable straps and six side panels - perfect for all hand sizes. Molded finger grooves on the front of the pistol grip also instinctively position the operator's hand for optimal shooting. Only HK pistols have this custom grip.

Although influenced by other HK models, the VP9 has all the features of the latest and greatest pistols. All controls are fully ambidextrous. With slide releases on both sides of the frame, left or right shooters can easily activate the magazine release.
A new feature is HK's patented loading bracket - simple components that fit on either side of the back of the slide to provide better grip when the slide is flipped back. Loading supports rapid reloading and makes the VP9 easier for shooters with weaker hands. The VP pistols use the tried and tested P30 steel magazine; available in 15 and 10 round capacities.
The VP9 has a MIL-STD-1913 extended picatinny rail molded into its polymer frame for mounting lights and accessories. This rail has been tested and certified to handle installed accessories weighing up to 5.6 ounces.
The VP9's proprietary flat recoil spring helps reduce recoil that affects both the operator and the pistol, improving shooter control during rapid fire and extending component life.

HK's renowned cold hammer forged barrel - made from weapon-grade steel - ensures long life. A HK barrel similar to the 9mm P30 model fired more than 90,000 rounds in a 2010 durability test. Polygonal hole profile, without the traditional country groove rifling, contributes to longer life and slightly increased muzzle velocity.
The machined steel slides of the VP9 are protected against corrosion and wear by HK's harsh environment finish and all metal parts, including springs and pins, have excellent metallurgical properties.
VP pistols are produced at the Heckler & Koch Oberndorf factory in southwest Germany. The VP9 is ideal for civilian sports shooting, security, military and law enforcement use.
