Col Aaron Bank - During World War II, 39-year-old Aaron Bank enlisted in the United States Army as a private in 1942. Assigned to the State Railroad Transportation Battalion because of his age, he volunteered for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in 1943. He served in Europe commanding the Jedburgh PACKARD Team, the aborted IRON CROSS mission and the Indochina Mercy Team RAVEN. During the Korean War, Banks served as director of civil affairs, director and deputy commander of the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team. The COL bank, which was transferred to the Office of the Chief of Psychological Warfare at the Pentagon, helped develop the basic doctrine and structure of the Army's Special Forces.
In 1952, he was selected to command the first Special Forces unit, the 10th Special Forces Group, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He moved with the group to West Germany at the end of 1953 and led it until the end of 1954. He retired in 1958 after serving again in the Army Staff. COL Bank was elected the first honorary colonel of the Special Forces Regiment in 1986 and served in this capacity until his death in 2004. Colonel Aaron Bank is an enduring symbol of Special Forces. Below is his quote from the 1956 Special Forces 10th Yearbook:
Col Aaron Bank
"Dedicated adherence to Spartan standards, maintaining constant operational readiness to perform multiple complex missions; complete faith in the ability to accomplish those missions and willing acceptance of dangers beyond the normal mission made the 10th Special Forces Group the unit with the greatest combat potential in the armed forces."
