The Heckler & Koch VP9 (known as the SFP9 in Europe and Canada) is a polymer-based semi-automatic assault rifle. The designation VP in the name refers to Volkspistole, which translates to "the people's pistol".

9 means 9 mm caliber designation. The VP9 is the third assault pistol that HK has released. A variant of the VP9, the VP40, chambered in .40 S&W; VP40 is known as SFP40 in Europe and Canada.

According to the manufacturer, Heckler & Koch (HK), the pistol was in development for more than four years before being released in June 2014.
It was originally created at the request of the Bavarian State Police to replace the HK P7. Because HK has a long history with striker-fired pistols, they decided to update their lineup with a newly designed trigger system that gives the pistols a single-stage trigger-like feel with a clean break.
The pistol was named the "P30X" because it is essentially a derivative of the Heckler & Koch P30.
The VP9 is an impact pistol with a Picatinny rail, ambidextrous controls, a hammer-molded polygon barrel, and interchangeable rear and side straps to customize the pistol grip to fit any shooter's hand, and 27 optimal grips. It has been in development for over four years and is Heckler & Koch's first striker-fired pistol since the P7 series pistols were introduced in the 1980s. The pistols are made at the Heckler & Koch factory in Oberndorf in southwest Germany.

Most striker-fired guns have a front travel pull that increases in weight as the shooter pulls it to the rear. The VP9 trigger has a short, light trigger with a solid, single-action type break followed by a short positive reset. Average stock trigger pull weight is 5.2 lb
(23 N). The VP9 trigger has a consistent travel pull followed by a positive set and a clean break. Disengagement does not involve releasing the striker by pulling the trigger.
Both the VP9 and VP40 use Heckler & Koch's ergonomic gun grip design, including three interchangeable rests and six side panels, allowing the pistol to fit any and all hand sizes.
Molded finger grooves on the front of the pistol grip also instinctively position the shooting hand for optimal shooting.

Although influenced by other HK models, the VP9 has several innovations of its own. Control is completely two-way. The slide release is permanent on both sides of the frame, and the magazine release can be easily activated by the left or right shooter.
A new feature is support for HK loading. They are simple components that mount to the back of the slide and provide the best leverage to secure the back of the slide. The load supports velocity reset and makes the VP9 easier to operate for hand-powered shooters. The VP pistols use the same steel magazine as the Heckler & Koch P30 in both 15 and 10 round capacity configurations.
The VP9 has an oversized MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail molded into its polymer frame for mounting lights and accessories. The gauge is tested and certified to handle heavier mounting accessories due to its full size, which adds strength. This stiffness gives the VP9 superior capability compared to some of its polymer competitors, whose frames shrink with use and can't handle the weight of some mid- and larger lights.
In the United States, the VP9 is available at retail as a standard package (three dot sights and two magazines) or as an "LE" (Law forcemt) package (equipped with tritium night sights and three magazines). The night sights are Meprolight Tru-Dot.

In late 2018, HK introduced the VP9 B (B "on the button"), which has a push-button magazine release, in response to American market preferences. In January 2020, HK updated the VP9 design to mount a red dot pistol optic with a slide slot, new 17-round magazines with increased capacity to replace the 15-round magazines, and iron sights with a front and rear sight. Front three-point setup, all as new standard features for the pistol.

Because of its trigger feature, Heckler & Koch labeled the SFP9 SF variant as a special forces pistol, not as a police pistol. The SFP9 SF has a trigger travel of about 6 mm (0.2 in), a relatively short trigger reset of 3 mm (0.1 in), and a trigger pull of about 23 N (5.2 lbf).
The German Police Technical Specifications (TR) (Technische Richtlinie Pistol im Kaliber 9mm x 19, January 2008 revision) require a first-shot pull of ≥30 N (6.7 lb) for certification as a German police duty pistol.

The SFP9 TR has a trigger travel of approximately 11 mm (0.4 in) and 5 mm (0.2 in) of reset and approximately 30–35 N (6.7–7.9 lbf) to meet German law on police weapons. .
An optical option is ready with a 140-millimeter (5.5 in) barrel and exclusive to this option a 19 N (4.3 lbf) trigger to match the mag, 20-round magazines are included.
As of 2019, a "slide conversion kit" is available from the manufacturer that converts the VP9 or VP9 B into a long slide model.
